Talking politics at a party just got a little more exciting! While our U.S. presidential candidates are blazing the campaign trail, we hope that burger fans are blazing their own trails with innovative flavor combinations and crowd-pleasing presentations. In the days leading up to the US Presidential Election, each state has lots of different political occasions: debates, party conventions and primaries, to name a few, and that sounds like a reason to celebrate—and what better food with which to commemorate the election year than a burger? Hosting your own Great Burger Debate of ‘08 party—it’s easy! All you need is a few friends, some great burger recipes and Sutter Home wines. And your ballot, of course!

In honor of Sutter Home Build a Better Burger® turning 18 and the upcoming presidential election, Sutter Home wants to help its future contest finalists prepare for the cook-off in the Fall by having folks host All-American parties throughout the year. Invite your guests to bring their personal best burger recipe and tell them they will all be facing off at the grill to determine who reigns supreme as Master of the Grill. If any of your guests aren’t feeling particularly confident in their burger creating ability, direct them to the Burgerbase at sutterhome.com for a little inspiration. The largest Burgerbase in the world, this resource will be better than any campaign manager!

Here are some simple tips for a Burger Debate (based on 12 guests):

• Have each guest prep three burgers
• Give everyone 30 minutes to prep
• Have the host (with a few helpers) cook all of the burgers
• Give the guests 15 minutes to dress and present their burger – don’t forget to give your burger a catchy name
• Cut all of the burgers into quarters, so everyone can try them.
• Guests can openly debate the merits of their burgers before everyone votes for their favorite and the winner can take home bragging rites and a bottle of wine that pairs well with their recipe

Remember to give your guests the judging criteria before they arrive. You can choose any criteria you’d like but here are a few suggestions:

  • Taste
  • Creativity
  • Presentation or visual appeal
  • Ease of preparation
  • Title of Recipe

And don’t forget to encourage the winning guest to enter their original recipe in this year’s Build a Better Burger contest! While it’s an honor to be crowned Burger Guru of the Great Burger Debate of ‘08, winning $50,000 at the Build a Better Burger Contest wouldn’t be bad either!
