The Great Burger Debate of '08 Wine Pairings.
Looking for the perfect wine compliment to your burger recipes? We asked the Culinary Director of the Build a Better Burger Contest, Jeffrey Starr to recommend some matches made in burger heaven for your Great Burger Debate party!
Most importantly, provide an array of red, white and rosé wines to compliment the range of flavors. Starr likes the Merlot with beef or lamb and Mediterranean flavors; Zinfandel is a natural with beef or veal and Italian ingredients; Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with salmon or tuna and most Asian spices; Chenin Blanc is a hit with chicken and mildly spicy foods; White Zinfandel also works well with chicken and enhances Asian and Latin cuisine; Pinot Grigio brings out the best in pork, turkey and fish along with tropical seasonings, Pinot Noir enhances the taste of veggie burgers such as ones made with Portobello mushrooms, but can hold its own with beef and a Southwest kick; and Gewurztraminer compliments chicken and lamb, especially when served with Indian herbs and spices.
